. About Vitarka Mudra (Teaching Gesture)

In Sanskrit, the word Vitarka means "thoughts", "applied thought" or "applied attention". It is a gesture of debate and comon in the Buddhist iconography. The pose is often seen used with images of Amitabha, Manjusri and even Avalokitesvara.

Vitarka mudra or Vitarkamudra is formed with a combination of gestures: the right palm faces outward, fingers up near the shoulder and the left palm faces out, fingers down by the knee. There can be a slight variation in this pose. Typically, the thumb and index finger of the right hand also touch lightly, forming circles, while the rest of the fingers are splayed outward. This gesture is also sometimes called vyakhyanamudra, the gesture of "explanation".
