Artistic museum quality statue from Cambodia; handmade with crushed eggshells.

This magnificent Buddha statue is truly a work-of-art. Crushed eggshells are attached piece by piece to the wood and gold leaf applied to the body of the Buddha. Each statue takes 3 months to be produced by trained Cambodian artisans who learn this technique following the tradition of the great Asian masters. All work is meticulously supervised for quality.

. Application of Egghshell Inlays

Small pieces of chicken or duck shell are cracked carefully using pins so that the pieces fit like a jigsaw across the surface. The finished surface is left with its natural color or can be lacquered with a cashew lacquer to give a deep rouge tone to accentuate the patterns.

. Lacquer and Gold Leaf Application

Lacquer

Liquid, dark, smokey, polished, laquer is a material demanding patience. Lacquer is a natural material extracted from trees and seeds. Cambodia has the perfect climate for natural lacquer with humidity and heat required for the curling process. Our artisans and the workshop only utilizes vegetable natural lacquer and traditional methods used by Asian masters since thousands of years.

Gold Leaf Application

Pure gold leaf is used for gilding. The gold is hammered by hand. The leaves are then pressed on a vellum pad, cut by gilding knives and lifted by special brushes before being applied by hand. The translucency of precious metal leaf means that to achieve a shiny result, the surface must be perfectly smooth and polished.

. Straw Marquetry

The art of forming a decorative panel using flattened slithers of natural cured straw. The stern is split, flattened, softened and scraped or ironed into a flat ribbon. It is then inlaid edge to edge on paper or wood until the surface is covered. The process in entirely handmade and our artisans only use hand tools and water-based adhesives and natural dyes.
From the preparation of the straws into ribbons, to the dyeing process, to the choosing and inlaying of each piece of straw onto the surface, the art of straw marquetry requires patience and a well developed sense of color and tone.

. Care

Never apply water
on the gold or eggshell. Just take a dry hydrophil cotton for make up to remove the dust.
Gold leaf is extremely thin but will last many years if not rubbed or touched excessivelly.
